More and more robots are popping up in offices, hospitals, schools and non-industrial environments such as warehouses, fulfillment centers and small manufacturing centers. To name just a few of the areas where robots are gaining traction and working with fewer interruptions and for less money than previously possible.

In 2009, an article presented at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) presented robotic operating systems (ROS) to the world. In fact, these operating systems are free, open-source, flexible, and free for robots.

By definition, this type of automation uses, for example, numerical control programs and machine tools to perform repetitive tasks, as shown in manufacturing. This technology is capable of improving current workplaces by equipping human workers with the necessary robotics and automation tools to focus on high-quality tasks. It is also a cheap compliment to traditional automation, thanks to its ability to work without the traditional automation infrastructure.

If you work in manufacturing or a similar field, you have probably heard the terms industrial automation, robotic process automation, test automation, and robotics.

Now that you have a general idea of what industrial automation, robotics, process automation, test automation, and robotics mean, look beyond the names. If you can imagine a physical situation in which automation and robotics would improve your overall productivity, you are undoubtedly a good candidate. However, if the task in question is virtual, you may be a better candidate for software automation.

As with any transformation initiative, there are hurdles to overcome, both in the short and long term. When you plan an effective implementation of robotics and process automation, you need to know what you want to achieve, and even if you don’t know that, you should know where you stand with the processes you want to automate. There is much work to be done to build a robotic or process automation system from scratch, and this phase can take months or years.

Robotic process automation technologies require the CTO and CIO to take on more leadership roles and take responsibility for the business results and risks of using RPA tools. As software and robots replace people in the company, C-level executives must be responsible for delivering business results and adhering to new governance policies. COO, CIO, Chief Human Resources Officer, and relevant C-level executives must take over the process of automating work and ensure the availability of enterprise-ready, secure platforms to control and operate bot systems.

Robots have long contributed to our industry, enabling the manufacture of most devices, appliances, transport processes and even food. Today, researchers are working on greater automation as robots take over more and more manufacturing processes. This has led to machines that can build, repair, and repair themselves (known as von Neumann machines, or self-replicating machines, after the mathematician who first invented them in the late 1940 “s).
